Why Austin for Families
Austin is one of America's most exciting and livable cities, and that energy translates beautifully for family travel. The outdoor life here is extraordinary β Barton Springs Pool, Lady Bird Lake, and the Barton Creek Greenbelt offer world-class natural recreation right in the city. The food scene is among the best in the country (breakfast tacos alone are worth the trip), live music is everywhere, and the relaxed, keep-it-weird Austin vibe means kids are welcomed everywhere. It's a city that rewards exploration and spontaneity.

Top Family Attractions
Barton Springs Pool
A three-acre natural spring-fed pool in Zilker Park maintaining a constant 68Β°F β Austin's beloved outdoor swimming hole where locals cool off on hot Texas days. Crystal clear water surrounded by live oak trees.
π‘ Go at 8 AM when it opens to beat the crowds. Lifeguards are on duty. The deep end is 18 feet β young swimmers should stay in the shallow areas near the dam.
Texas State Capitol
The largest state capitol building in the US β a stunning Renaissance Revival structure taller than the US Capitol. Free self-guided and ranger-led tours of the chambers, rotunda, and grounds.
π‘ The free tours are excellent and run throughout the day. The underground extension visitors center has interesting exhibits. Stand in the rotunda's center and whisper β kids love the acoustics.
Natural Bridge Caverns
Texas's largest show cave system with stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations, just 30 minutes south of Austin in New Braunfels. Multiple tour options including an underground adventure tour.

South Congress Avenue
Austin's most iconic street β a mile of independent boutiques, vintage shops, food trucks, murals (including the famous 'I Love You So Much' mural), and eclectic restaurants.
π‘ Park at the Alamo Drafthouse or Torchy's end and walk north toward the Capitol. Best on weekend mornings before crowds arrive. The food trucks have excellent tacos.
Austin Zoo
Austin's charming rescue zoo in the Hill Country β not as large as major US zoos but gives children close encounters with lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and primates that are rescue animals.
π‘ Very different from a traditional zoo β this is a rescue facility. Animals are often closer than expected. Small but genuinely memorable. Allow 2-3 hours.

Getting Around
Austin is growing rapidly but still somewhat car-centric. The downtown area and South Congress are walkable. The MetroRail serves some suburban areas. For most families, rideshare or a rental car is the most practical option. Parking downtown is expensive β use hotel parking when possible. The hike-and-bike trail around Lady Bird Lake connects Hyatt Regency Austin to Rainey Street on foot or by bike.
Safety for Families
Austin is a generally safe city. Downtown, South Congress, East Austin, and most tourist areas are safe for families. Sixth Street on Friday and Saturday nights gets very rowdy after 10 PM β stick to Rainey Street for a more manageable evening vibe. The outdoor areas (Barton Springs, Greenbelt, Lady Bird Lake) are all safe and well-used by locals.
What to Pack
𧳠Lightweight clothing for Austin's heat (spring and fall are mild but summers hit 100Β°F+). Swimwear for Barton Springs Pool β you'll go more than once. Water sandals or quick-dry shoes for the Barton Creek Greenbelt swimming holes. Sunscreen and a wide-brim hat for outdoor activities. Austin is casual β you won't need anything formal.
