It's a city that rewards exploration and spontaneity.

Getting Around

Austin is growing rapidly but still somewhat car-centric. The downtown area and South Congress are walkable. The MetroRail serves some suburban areas. For most families, rideshare or a rental car is the most practical option. Parking downtown is expensive β€” use hotel parking when possible. The hike-and-bike trail around Lady Bird Lake connects Hyatt Regency Austin to Rainey Street on foot or by bike.

Safety for Families

Austin is a generally safe city. Downtown, South Congress, East Austin, and most tourist areas are safe for families. Sixth Street on Friday and Saturday nights gets very rowdy after 10 PM β€” stick to Rainey Street for a more manageable evening vibe. The outdoor areas (Barton Springs, Greenbelt, Lady Bird Lake) are all safe and well-used by locals.

What to Pack

🧳 Lightweight clothing for Austin's heat (spring and fall are mild but summers hit 100Β°F+). Swimwear for Barton Springs Pool β€” you'll go more than once. Water sandals or quick-dry shoes for the Barton Creek Greenbelt swimming holes. Sunscreen and a wide-brim hat for outdoor activities. Austin is casual β€” you won't need anything formal.
