Getting Around

Dallas is extremely car-centric β€” a rental car or heavy rideshare use is necessary for most family itineraries. The DART light rail is useful for downtown-to-airport travel and connecting some neighborhoods, but coverage is limited. DFW Airport to downtown takes 45 minutes on the Orange Line. Plan your days geographically to minimize driving.

Safety for Families

Dallas is generally safe in the tourist and business areas. Downtown, Uptown, the Arts District, and Deep Ellum (earlier in the evening) are all fine for families. Avoid South Dallas and West Dallas after dark. The Bishop Arts District is lovely during the day.

What to Pack

🧳 Dallas summers are brutal (100Β°F+ with high humidity) β€” pack lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and high-SPF sunscreen. A light jacket for heavily air-conditioned museums and restaurants. In spring and fall, layers are helpful as temperatures can swing 30 degrees between morning and afternoon.
