Getting Around

Houston is one of America's most car-dependent cities. Renting a vehicle is virtually essential for families wanting to visit Space Center Houston, Kemah Boardwalk, the Zoo, and the Museum District efficiently. The METRORail light rail has limited routes useful mainly for travel between the Museum District and downtown, but doesn't connect to most family attractions. Rideshares (Uber/Lyft) are affordable and widely available. Parking is generally free at most Houston attractions and much easier than in coastal cities.

Safety for Families

The main tourist and hotel areas of Houston β€” downtown, Midtown, the Museum District, Galleria/Uptown, River Oaks β€” are safe for families. The city has higher crime statistics overall than some comparable cities, but these are concentrated in specific neighborhoods that tourist itineraries rarely intersect. Use standard urban precautions and stay aware of your surroundings, particularly in the evenings in downtown areas. The Museum District, Hermann Park, and Space Center Houston areas are universally safe family environments.

What to Pack

🧳 Houston's climate demands specific preparation. In summer (May–September), pack moisture-wicking, light-colored clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, and insect repellent. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink water constantly as heat exhaustion is a real risk. In winter and spring, a light jacket for morning and evenings suffices. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for zoo and museum days. A small portable fan can be a lifesaver for young children on outdoor summer excursions.

Insider Tips

πŸ’‘

Rent a car β€” Houston is spread across 670 square miles and public transportation cannot efficiently connect major family attractions like Space Center Houston, Kemah Boardwalk, and the Galleria.

πŸ’‘

Space Center Houston is a full-day experience; arrive when it opens at 10am to maximize time in the Starship Gallery and on the tram tour to NASA's mission control buildings.

πŸ’‘

The Houston Museum District is walkable and includes the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and Children's Museum of Houston all within a few blocks.

πŸ’‘

Buffalo Bayou Park offers a beautiful urban greenway with kayak rentals, walking trails, and public art β€” a great free option when the Texas heat permits.
